Why have I got hand foot and mouth disease again?I was diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease 3 weeks ago, I had all the blisters and was given antibiotics to get rid of the infected blisters and my skin was hardening so the blisters couldn't surface. My skin ended up coming off in slabs which was extremely painful, it was like the top of the skin had separated itself from the lower part of the skin. Now I have the blisters all over again and hot and cold sweats 3 weeks later, I will add I am 25 years old and I have an autoimmune condition called RSD and also fibromyalgia, how did I get it twice and can I get it again? I thought it was like chickenpox where you get it once and then you are immune to the virus after. I feel much worse this time, I just felt tired with it the last time, this time it is almost like flu.

So sorry to hear about that!
Am not a doctor, but I and our family have gotten hand foot mouth (aka Coxsackie virus) more than once because there are at least 7 different strains, so it's not exactly like chicken pox, but similar.
Good luck!

Hand, foot and mouth disease is the result of an infection by a member of the Enterovirus group. That's a big family of viruses, and includes enteroviruses, coxsackie viruses, and polioviruses. In most cases, HFM disease is due to a coxsackie virus- but the others will also cause the same symptoms. An infection with one virus makes you immune to that one, but not necessarily to the others. As you are already immunocompromised, you'd be at higher risk for a second infection by another member of the family. It's sort of like inviting one cousin visit, and a few weeks later, a different cousin drops in. Some of the family are also worse guests to host than others, obviously. As far as how you got it, it's mostly spread person to person by direct contact. You touch a contaminated surface, or person- and transfer the bacteria to your mouth with your own unwashed hands. That's why they stress hand washing before you eat, and otherwise keep your hands away from your mouth and face. Since you have immune problems, you should get in the habit of using hand sanitizer a lot, especially before you eat- and keeping your hands away from your face the rest of the time.
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
