Chicken Pox & Pregnancy?

Chicken Pox & Pregnancy?I'm pregnant & in my 3rd trimester (due in February) and my daughter just had a very mild case of chicken pox last week due to recieving the vaccine at her last wellness visit. Am I in danger of passing it on to my unborn baby even though I had it as a child?

Yes, my cousin had chicken pox very bad while pregnant and had to be hospitalized! The baby also got them inutero! I would contact your dr. and talk to them and let them know if you get them...ASAP! If you had them as a child, most likely you won't get them again....so most likely the baby won't get them. But I have heard of people getting them twice.

It is quite often that women who are pregnant come into contact with someone who has chicken pox. This can cause great worry, but it is uncommon for there to be major problems.

80-90% of women who are pregnant are likely to be protected from chicken pox, either from previously having the disease or a sub-clinical, 'silent' infection.

I know it is common but there are some of us that won't get anything while pregnant. It's funny I was my healthiest when I was with child. My sister got scarlet fever and I was the only one who could care for her and I didn't get it. Best thing is have your doc give you some latex gloves if she is still contagious or go buy them yourself at a pharmacy and wash your hands a lot.

There is risk of birth defects such as deafness when a pregnant woman is exposed to chicken pox. HOWEVER, if YOU have had chicken pox before or were vaccinated against chicken pox when you were a child, you are likely immune to this recent exposure.

If you do not know if you were immunized as a child, your doctor can perform a simple blood test to see if you have the antibodies that indicate immunity.

In any event, since we are not doctors, I would highly recommend you contact your primary or OB doctor.

Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
