my son has chicken pox and i have a 2 week old newborn baby?how likely is it that my baby will catch chicken pox and if she does how bad will it be for her? I have had chicken pox when i was 6 and I am breastfeeding my daughter, does this mean she might have immunity from it? anyone else been in this situation?

It's highly unlikely your newborn will catch chicken pox. It's extrememly rare for an infant under 1 year to catch it, even when exposed. A big part is immunity from the mother.

I would definatly ask your doctor, you are immune but you could carry between the two and since she wouldnt have that vaccine yet it could cause a very severe case of chicken pox that may include hospitalization. Be very careful check often for fevers as thats a good first sign and check her body regularly. It can take days for her to get it, keep him away from her as much as you possibly can, but ask the doctor for any other tips for sure.

Ask your doctor and be very careful to keep your baby away from your son. I gave my sister chicken pox when I was 5- she was 9 months. She was fine, but it may (or may not) be harmful to younger babies. Call your children's pediatrician as soon as you can.

I'm not quite sure about a newborn but my daughter got chicken pox when I was pregnant. Both her doctor and my OB were worried( and I also had it as a child) so I'm thinking if it can be passed from a child to an unborn child it is likely. Best way to know for sure is to call the doctor and ask them :-) good luck!

You son was most contagious the few days before his spots appeared. She has already been exposed to it so there's really no point in separating them.
Breastfeeding your daughter is good but its not going to prevent Chicken Pox. The good news is that if she gets it she will most likely have it easier now than if she had it at an older age.
Also, be sure to have your childrens' doctor document that your son
(and your daughter if she gets it) have had Chicken Pox. This could be useful for later. She won't need the vaccine if she's got documented proof of immunity.
Edited to add: My husband had Chicken Pox as an infant, it was a very mild case. It wouldn't be a bad idea to consult your ped anyway. Especially with an infant that young.
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
