Good question. My son had chicken pox last year and couldn't go to nursery for eight days. I had a big freelance project on at the time and had the client yelling at me on the phone - although she did still pay me for it in the end. It wasn't a great situation to be in, but it's such a minor thing that I wouldn't have opted for the vaccine.

I got the nursery manageress to put a sign on the door saying that anyone who wanted to get chicken pox over and done with was welcome to come and play (my son was fine, just spotty and bored!) but no-one did. Although of course half the nursery got it a couple of weeks later anyway...

My son does still have a couple of scars, which I guess some parents might worry about.

Most kids get chicken pox and it's no big deal. A small fraction of the population gets seriously ill and requires hospitalization.A few even die. Even though only a tiny fraction are killed by chicken pox, EVERYONE gets chicken pox. A tiny fraction of EVERYONE is still afair number of people. 145 people died of chicken pox every year before the vaccine. The chicken pox vaccine saves lives.

Also, as far as the "money" argument, keep in mind there are plenty of people who barely have enough to get by. For them, "money" can mean food on the table. For others it can mean college or not.
