Can a cancer patient catch Shingles from being around someone who has been vaccinated? My son recieved a chicken pox vaccine two weeks ago. Now my poor Dad who has cancer has Shingles and was hospitalized today. Is there any connection? My son's dr. never gave me any precautions and she said (only because I asked) that it would not be contagious to anyone else. I feel horrible thinking we should have thought and kept my son home for a while. Could my Dad have caught this from my son?

Shingles is a re emergence of when you had chicken pox, its common to come out in the 40-60's.
Shingles is not contagious
It looks like the stress of cancer, nothing more than that.

It is possible, but it is very easy to catch even when you are healthy. Don't blame yourself - and I hope he get better soon.. Best wishes for you and your family!!

No, your dad did not get shingles from your son. There are no known cases of Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) transmitting shingles to anyone. Only on very, very rare occasions do people even contract the chicken pox from exposure to someone vaccinated with Varivax. The most likely case is that your father developed shingles on his own because his immune system is suppressed from the cancer. The timing was just ironic in your case.

Wow!! That is a good question! The problem with cancer pts. is they are immunosuppressed so something that wouldn't be contagious to the average person can be contagious to them. It would depend if the chicken pox vaccine is made with the actual virus - I dont know if it is or not. Call a hospital and ask their infection control nurse-they are very knowledgeable.

It is entirely possible your dads shingles are from the vaccination. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus, one you have had it the virus lies dormant in the nerve roots, something can trigger it and it then travels to the nerve endings causing the rash and pain which by the way is entirely one sided. The vaccination your son had could have been the trigger for him. Meantime shingles as such are not contagious but if a shingles patient has the blistery rash and comes into contact with someone that has NOT had chicken pox they can transmit that. The chicken pox virus is contagious but a case of the shingles is not since that is a result of a past case of chicken pox.
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
