I never caught the Chickenpox and am now considering the Vaccine, any RNs care to comment on its safety?I am 23 years old, never got them and now that I have a son (he is only 1 as of now) I know I will be exposed to more kids that could transmit it. I have heard it can be very serious to get as an adult so the vaccine is a consideration my doctor said. I have a panic disorder and tend to worry about vaccinations and chance of allergic reactions or complications. How safe is this shot? The documentation states a <10% chance to have a fever from it and a 4% or so chance of mild rash and there are also other lower chanced conditions that can occur. Any RNs or people knowledgeable in this field care to comment on your thoughts about the shot and its safety?

I am an RN, and I would strongly recommend you get the varicella vaccination, the virus responsible for chicken pox is herpes zoster, and it can lead to very bad chickenpox or even shingles which are incredibly painful. The shot is relatively safe, I have personally never seen anyone have a reaction more than getting a mild fever, or rash which is a LOT better than what could happen to you if you get the virus.

Please go to get one asap. Your thinking is absolutely right on this. Chicken Pox can be very dangerous to adults and then the child suffers too. Since you already have a panic disorder to vaccinations then the time is now to just get it over with. If you don't have any problem with eggs with the usual gas that most people get then the vaccination is but a simple shot like the yearly flu shot is. You're not only doing this for yourself, but your child too. Good luck and God Bless
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
