I'm 16 wks pregnant and think I may have been around someone that has measles....?I went to visit my dad today and found out my step brother has a rash. Its nor bright red, but is slightly raised. It looks a little like millions of pin pricks on his back, stomach and the tops of his legs. A few days ago, he had a few temperature but still seemed fine. He went to the Dr's today and they told his mother that the rash was viral. She also warned her to keep him away from pregnant women. The Dr was convinced the rash was not chicken pox or measles because he was not ill enough. The Dr found out that he hasn't had his MMR yet. My questions are...
If it is measles, will my unborn baby be ok? And does anyone have any idea on what the rash could be? Apart from saying it's viral the Dr didn't say much else!
Thanks in Advance!

do you have the measles vaccine shot? i got mine way back when.
Answer by Poppy: John is due 12/19/08
Have you had the MMR vaccine? If so there are no problems.
The rash could be a multitude of things. It's very unlikely it is the measles because most people are immune from the MMR vaccine.

If the kids doctor said it was not measles then you should be ok. Ask your own doctor just to be safe.

How old is your stepbrother that he hasn't had his MMR? Have you had your MMR? Bottom line is that you need to contact your doctor and tell him exactly what is going on, so he can keep an eye on you and tell you what to watch out for. In the mean time avoid your father's family completely until your stepbrother is completely over this.
To answer your questions: The baby is in danger only if you actually contract measles while pregnant or receive the vaccine while pregnant. There are lots of different rashes that are viral, there is no way we could know whether or not it is measles.

It all depends on your immunity to measles. You should be immune if you had your MMR shots as a child. Your dr. can test your immunity with a blood test, but if you are not immune & you in fact were exposed, your baby could be at risk. In this case, there is nothing you can do, but if you are immune then you should be fine. If you are not immune, but was not exposed, you should avoid this in the future if known & then you should receive an MMR booster after delivery.

Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
