is it ok for my newborn to be around someone who has been exposed to shingles?

is it ok for my newborn to be around someone who has been exposed to shingles? My newborn and I have doctors appointments on Friday. The only person available to take us is my friend. My friend just discovered that her grandmother has shingles. My friend has had the chicken pox vaccine so the nurses say that she (the friend) will not be in danger to get it. My child has not has any vaccines yet. Should I try to find another ride or just go with her?

While it's best kids get chickenpox as opposed to adults who get more sever cases (like Shingles), I wouldn't expose a newborn to it intentionally. Once she was older, it wouldn't be so bad, but a newborn is more fragile.

I wouldn't risk a slight cold with my newborn, if i were you i would not allow my child to be exposed to this person. Especially since baby doesn't have any vaccinations. Better safe than sorry . Take care of baby first! ;)

Call the pediatrician today & ask. Chicken Pox in babies & older people is not good, so I'd call the dr. and if necessary reschedule the appointment.

Is shingles contagious?

Yes, you can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before. This means your baby could well be affected. (You cannot get shingles itself from someone who has shingles.) The shingles rash is contagious until all the blisters have scabbed and are dry. Also, if the blisters are covered with a dressing, it is unlikely that the virus will pass on to others. This is because the virus is passed on by direct contact with the blisters.

However, as a general rule, pregnant womenand babies who have not had chickenpox should avoid people with shingles.

Also, to play safe and not risk passing on the virus to others who may not have had chickenpox, you should not share towels, go swimming, or play contact sports such as rugby whilst you have a shingles rash.

It seems that unless your friends comes into direct contact with her grandmothers shingles then into contact with your baby, it will be fine.
Also some parents like their babies to get chicken pox early but shingles is so much worse than chicken pox..It itches and burns, there are open sores, not something anybody would wish on a newborn!
All that said, its better to be safe than sorry. I say get the bus!

I would not....just to be safe. A newborn can contract chicken pox from shingles (I don't care what anyone else says) and that would be a terrible mess.

Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
