Abstract: Herpes zoster (HZ) develops in 10-30% of patients infected with varicella-zoster virus (VZV). A decline in cell-mediated immunity is believed to be important in the reactivation of this virus. Since varicella vaccine became available, the incidence of natural varicella infection has declined by 75-80%. Lack of exposure to natural infection eliminates a source of immunity boosting, and there has been concern that rates of HZ would consequently increase. Since 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Group Health Cooperative in the state of Washington have collaborated to monitor rates of varicella and HZ.
