Chicken pox party.....?

Chicken pox party.....?I know that I'm a new Mum an' all (my Daughter is 10 months old) but I am an Auntie more than 10 times over and I have never (ever) heard of a chicken pox party, however, I was at lunch with a friend and she said "so and so has shingles and her Son has chicken pox, so all the Mothers from the school have taken their children round her house so that they can all get chicken pox while they're young and get it out of the way". I honestly sat there stunned and completely sure that my friend was kidding me but taa daa, I spoke with another Mummy who confirmed that there is such a thing as a chicken pox party. She then asked me if I wanted to take my Daughter along to the next one. Are these Mothers INSANE? Why on earth would I want to take my Daughter to a party and have her catch chicken pox? Am I missing something? Is this a global thing? Or does it only happen in London?
No chicken pox vaccine is availble in the UK :(

I've heard of that. I don't know what I would do if the situation came up for us, but I know when I was little one of my moms friends little one got the chicken pox, so they took me over there so I would get it too. I suppose I'm glad now, I was too young to remember!

The only reason my mom did that with us was so we would get it out of the way early, I've also heard it affects you a lot worse when your older. Not sure if thats true or not, but thats what I've heard..

We live in the US.

Yes it is everywhere to my knowledge however I haven't heard that since I was little. Now in the US there is a Chicken pox vaccine. My 5 year old has had it and I will get my 2 month old to get it as well when he is at the right age. It is 2 shots and they get it right along with all the other vaccines.

This is something that used to be done way back when. It's not so much done now as we know how dangerous chicken pox can be, and that there is a vaccine available. Besides, once the kids actually have the symptoms of chicken pox, they are no longer contagious...well, less likely to be contagions.
Many parents still do this. It is insane, but it's under the thinking to just get them done and over with young, because they can be more severe as the kids get older.
I'm in Canada, and there are still parents that do this.
There was even a South Park episode about it.

I am in the US - I have heard people joke about such things . . . but I don't know of anyone that has really had a "party".

Definitely, don't take your daughter - chicken pox can be dangerous for infants - it is usually mild but brain swelling, pnemonia and skin infections are possible.

In the US, a lot of people get vaccinated against the chicken pox. The vaccine is thought to be about 90% effective and those that do still get it tend to get a milder form.
