For people who have had the CHICKENPOX VACCINE, have you ever developed shingles?I'm referring to people who HAVE NEVER had chickenpox, only the vaccine....Also, if you had developed shingles, how bad was it? Was it more mild because of the vaccine? Thank you.

I don't think you will find anyone who had sucessful vaccination with Chicken pox later developed shingles. The chicken pox vaccine contains a live, but attenuated virus. That means it can't reproduce. The immune system doesn't realize that though- and reacts to eliminate it, which gives you an immunity. Since the virus can't reproduce, it can't go into the suspended animation state inside a cell either. That is where shingles come from- virus that is still living in the body. Now if you have a vaccination failure, which they believe happens in 1 or 2 people out of 10, and they don't recieve a booster, and go on to actually get chickenpox, those people have a much lighter case of pox. Since they basically get chicken pox naturally, they are at risk for shingles later on. But I don't think they have had a documented case of shingles occuring in a vaccinated person, no. Also, since the vaccination has only been used for a short time, I don't think there are enough people old enough to be candidates for shingles yet. Shingles doesn't usually rear it's ugly head until you are a little older, usually in your 30's- and the first group of vaccinated individuals is just now approaching the magic 3-0 age. If you are debating getting the vaccination, it's worth it. Chances are high that you will gain immunity, and even if you don't, it will mean a lighter case of chicken pox. That translates into less chance for developing shingles as well.

I had the vaccine as a child - but developed shingles when I was in my late thirties. It actually broke out on my forehead. It was soooo painful. It felt like a little man was sitting on top of my head and without any notice - it felt like hot tar on my forehead. It was awful!!!! Obviously it was NOT mild. Good luck and hope you never develop develop them. The pain was so intense - they sent me to a phyciatrist for hypnosis - they were afraid I could lose an eye. And they can return anytime down the road.

Shingles means your bodies immune system is faulty. Have you recently had a set back in health? Ie, surgery can cause shingles since the virus harbors in the spinal fluid, have you had mono or anything going on?
Stress can even trigger it.
Shingles belongs to any flavi virus, closely related to herpes and chicken pox. most children have been exposed to epstein barr as well which also is relative to shingles.
There is no telling who will get shingles, but....those who have had the vaccine as a child may cause outbreaks as young adults, ie, college students. Only time will tell.
As for the vaccine to be attenuated, that doesn't mean someone will or wont get shingles (or any other weird disease)
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
