Advice from anyone who has/has not had their child get the chicken pox vaccine? My children are 2.5 and 3.5 years old. We have not yet had them get the chicken pox vaccine. When we were first offered it, we discussed it with our doctor and decided that when the older (seeing as they are only 12 months and 4 days apart in age) was going to start school, we would have them both get the vaccine if they had not had the chicken pox yet.
My older will be going to preschool in the fall, so it is nearing the time to decide what we are going to do, and now I am hesitant. The vaccine has been out longer now, and I have not heard anything negative about it. What is everyone's opinion? Tell me if you haven't given it to your child, how old they are and your reasons. If you did have it done, please tell me at what age you had it done and if your child had any problems with it. Thanks in advance!

My daughter got the vaccination a month after her 1st birthday, and she was fine afterward. She's going on 3 and is perfectly healthy.

If you do decide to give them the shot give them some tylenol before they get it, it will help with them a lot.

This vaccine came out when my 15 yr. old daughter was about 1. She had just gotten the chicken pox from kids I was babysitting, and we missed getting the vaccine by about 1 month! She did not have a severe case, but I have seen them. They are awful! The itching can be unbearable and the kids are miserable! I also have an 8 yr. old daughter and she received the vaccine when she was 1. She has since been in preschools, kindergarten, first grade and is now in second grade. We had no ill effects from the vaccine. And with all that she does, I am sure she has been exposed to it in some fashion and has not gotten it. I feel very secure in this vaccine. I too am hesitant about newer vaccines, but I do believe this has been around for at least 15 years. If your children did not have problems with other vaccines, I would definitely get it done. If you get chicken pox when you are older too, it can be much more dangerous.

My son got it at his 12 mos visit and he just broke out with a Tiny rash on his face that the dr told me was more due to his face being chapped then anything it was winter time he did get slight fever from the vaccine even if they get the vaccine there is still a small chance that they can get a small case of the chicken pox if it goes around the day care center

I gave to my son when it was offered I think around 12 or 18 months I can't remember he's 3 now. He has had no bad reaction to it. My reason was I had chicken pox as a child and it was horrible. If I can prevent him from having the chicken pox why not. My sister has two girls 6 nad 4 they both have not had the chicken pox vaccine. My sister says when they are 12 if they have not had the chicken pox she will give them the vaccine because chicken pox can be deadly in adults. She believe vaccines are dangerous and has not gave them a lot.
Hope this helps.
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
