babie exposed to shingles?My son is 4 months old my father in law has shingles he found out that today, is he going to get chickenpox? And if he does anyone knoes anything about that? What are the risk? Complications? How does it spead from one to another?

My sister just came down with shingles, which I understand is a form of the chickenpox. My son who is two months old has been held, kissed, and changed by her. Will he get the chickenpox? Dear Very Worried Mom,
You are absolutely right that shingles is related to chickenpox.
Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus many years after the original chickenpox episode. It is not thought to be as contagious as chickenpox (possibly because it often is located on a part of the body that is covered with clothes), but sometimes a person can come down with chickenpox after exposure to someone who has shingles. This means that it is possible that your son could get chickenpox from your sister.
The good news is that, in general, otherwise healthy children who get chickenpox in the first year of life sometimes have milder disease than older children and adults because they may still have some protection from antibodies they got from their mother during pregnancy (that is, of course, if the mother had chickenpox earlier).
However, to be on the safe side, if your son has any health problems, is on any medications, or if he looks like he may be getting chickenpox (e.g., gets a fever or rash), you should discuss this exposure with his healthcare provider to see if he needs any special treatment. Also, remember that when he reaches his first birthday, you can protect him from chickenpox by having him immunized with the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine.

My husband had shingles when my son was 9 months old, and he didn't end up with the chicken pox. We were actually hoping that he would, so that we wouldn't have to worry about it later, but he didn't. We were told by the dermatologist/skin disorder specialist that it could only be spread through actually touching the sores, yet were told by your all around health advisor that it can be airborne. Either way, my son was always around my husband, and even touched the sores and didn't get it.
If he does get it, it's the chicken pox, but I honestly don't know if it can be airborne or not. Good luck!

omg i had shingles when i was aroun 38wks pregnant n my son was delievered fine it didnt spread to him.i spent al ot of time aroun yunger childrn but they didnt get it,they wud get the chikn pox tho not shingles bcus its from the herpes virus that stays in ur system after uve had the chikn pox n it reactives n forms shingles or herpes zoster(wich is rely painful).it can only be passed on durin the 2nd stage wen the blisters are poppin and oozing,the liquid can cause the chikn pox if it enters the childs body...such as thru a cut or orally.the chances r minimal.hav him cover up the infected area and all is well.gudluck 2 him and u
