Chickenpox: Would you believe a person who says she never had chicken pox if......1st) she had a big family with 5 brothers and sisters and 2nd) she raised 2 children both of which she cared for when they had chickenpox. Just wondering if she just doesn't remember

We are trying to decide if she should get the shingles vaccination. But if she never had chickenpox, why would she need the shingles vaccination.

btw, she is 80 years old
Should she get the chickenpox vaccine or the shingles vaccine? Or both?

Answer by twowords
Because they are two different things.

It is very possible that she is immune to them. It is not uncommon.

This really would be a question to take up with her Dr. Also if her mother is still alive, mom may remember if she has had them. It also depends on the persons age and health.

I honestly don't know about shingles but however unlikely it is that she didn't get the chickenpox it would be better to be vaccinated and be safe than be sorry later. It's an evil disease. If I didn't know for sure I'd just get the shot.

She should be vaccinated. In fact in healthcare, if if someone says they have had chickenpox, unless a date is provided, or scars shown, or proof of vaccine is provided, they are assumed not to have had it. Soooo, if she says no, likely the answer is no. If she had had it she would likely have visible scars, although not everyone does. The reason for the shingles vaccination, is because shingles and chicken pox are thought to be caused by the same virus.

Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
