Does blood transfusions cause immunity to chicken pox or other disaeae?A family member that had been sick a lot received several transfusions. Since the immune system works with the blood would the person receiving blood have an imunity to chicken pox.

No, immunity is not transferred that way. It requires that your body "learn" the disease causing virus and thus be able to recognize it and kill it when it is reintroduced. Blood products are regularly screened and treated with radiation to kill any virus or pathogen and the white cells that battle infections are removed. If your family member received blood it was probably a blood component such as PRBC's (packed red blood cells) which are transfused through a filter to remove the white blood cells. This helps to prevent a transfusion reaction. There is a vaccine against chicken pox available. When your family member is feeling better I would speak to your health care provider about the possibility of getting that vaccine. Good luck!
