one of my friend`s son has chicken pox, we were planning for vacation together?Hi I am 22 weeks pregnant. One of my friend`s son has chicken pox. He had been to doctor and should be ok withing 2 days. We were planning for a vacation in snow on 14th feb. I had chicken pox when I was child. I heard one gets it once in lifetime. Is it true. My husband I are planning to cancel this trip as chicken pox is contagious. Was it a right decision. Please advise. I know my friend is going to feel bad but I can`t help it.

Not everyone who gets chicken pox becomes immune to them. My advice is to stay away from the kid if he has it. It can be harmful to your baby if you catch it. My sister was scared her baby would be blind and deaf when she caught them at 17 wks. and now he has bad eye sight when no one else in the family wears glasses and she wonders if that's what caused it. She had had chicken pox as a child as well. Just stay away to be safe.

It is possible to catch it more than once in a lifetime. I would do the same as you and not go. Most likely it would have been fine, but theres always a risk. Better safe than sorry.

No, no..don't feel bad or rude for you're friend. You're decision is not a malicious one, nor is it offensive. You're protecting your unborn baby, as any mother would, surely your friend gets this? It's not entirely true that you only get it once in a lifetime. If you've had it as a child, then as an adult it can come back again as shingles. (The virus manifests itself differently when we're older). In laymans terms..if you've already had the virus, it lays kind of 'dormant' if you will... near the base of your spine. Certain things can trigger it again as an adult including exposure to the chicken pox virus again. What you're doing is precautionary. . better to be safe than sorry.
You can go on a trip anytime but you can't reverse potential problems that contracting the virus whilst pregnant could cause to your baby. You did the right thing. Stop worrying.

I've had chicken pox twice. I'm living proof that the once and you're immune is not the case for everyone. It is true for most people. Chicken pox is highly contagious, however, as an adult, you would develop shingles, not chicken pox. Shingles is the adult form and is far worse. I'd recommend cancelling the trip until the son has time to recover. He's still infectious if he has the blisters.
Good luck, and stay healthy! =)
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
