Question about shingles contagiousness & prophylactic immunization of my mom (Pros. please)...?Evidently, my younger sister's mother-in-law was diagnosed with shingles. Mom doesn't feel inclined to have V. zoster titers checked.
If there are no vesicles visible, how contagious is it, particularly in the case of my mom who's in her mid fifties, Hx, controlled DM 1 (about 50 years after having chicken pox)?
If it is, indeed, contagious by contact, is prophylactic immunization with Varicella vaccine indicated in such cases (even if it's off label)?
Thank you graciously for your advice.

It is most contagious when visible and yes by contact. She should check with her Physician to get a course of treatment if she has been caring for the person with shingles and come in contact with the outbreak. There is a shot available to immunize against the shingles if it has not already invaded her system THAT might indeed be warranted in her case.

Generally people that have not had chicken pox, are likely to get chicken pox from someone that has shingles. Shingles break out on a person from stress (physical or emotional)- not from catching it from someone else. A person needs to have already had chicken pox early in their life to get shingles, as it is the same virus only dormant and flaring up.
There is a shingles vaccine formulated for adults. If she is worried about getting it- take her to the doc. and ask about it.
Other than that- make sure she eats healthy foods, takes her vitamins, washes her hands to keep from getting other illness, and gets plenty of rest.
If for some reason you think she has shingles. Take her to the doctor or an urgent care clinic (no need to go to the ER unless it is in your eye) to get antiviral and maybe steroids to help.
Good luck!
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
