I'd take having chicken pox anyday over having herpes! Chicken pox go away...herpes doesn't!

Chicken pox is a one-time infection, so if you develop it during pregnancy, it is considered a "primary outbreak". Primary outbreaks of are usually the most severe of any outbreak when it comes to these kinds of diseases. So if you never had chicken pox as a child and contracted it while pregnant, it could definitely have serious consequences for your pregnancy.
Herpes would also be very risky to acquire during pregnancy if you had never had an outbreak before - if your primary outbreak of herpes occurrs during pregnancy it is very dangerous as it affects you systemically (throughout the body). If you have had it diagnosed before and have had other secondary outbreaks, those outbreaks are not as dangerous to the child in utero as the infection doesn't affect you systemically and instead infects only the local region where you develop the blisters.
It's still necessary to do a c-section if you have a secondary outbreak because the virus is present in the blisters and can cause infection of the newborn if it comes in direct contact with the blisters or fluid.

To be safe if I were you I would opt for a c-section. If you have a break out before you deliver the baby can contract your herpes on their face and body. I would do a little more research before you are due. Also chicken pox go away and you only get it once in a lifetime. Herpes are with you forever.

It's so much worse because it's a different form, that's all. Just like how there are so many different forms of HPV and some of them do different things or are worse than others. I have HPV and my doctor has been keeping a close eye on my Paps.
Your doctor will check you before you deliver because if you have a breakout during delivery, you can pass it on to the baby. Your doctor sounds like he is taking all the necessary precautions.

Well, really they're both really bad for a newborn. But if you have had chicken pox then the baby will be protected for a year from getting sick from chicken pox, even with exposure. If however you haven't had it there is great danger to you and the fetus. However, herpes doesn't invade your body in the same way - it tends to be localized to the point of transmission (your genitals or your mouth in some cases) and hides in your nerves when you don't have an outbreak. For a baby being born they could have herpes all over their body if you have an active outbreak, and that would be devastating. Since we never get over herpes infections we never really have an immunity to transmit to our babies, so it's a different mechanism even though they're both in the same family of viruses.
Get the facts on the chickenpox vaccine, treatment, causes (varicella zoster virus, VZV), symptoms and signs (itchy, red rash).
