why do people get measles/chicken pox once?your elder sister had measles when she was a child. now you have have measles, but your elder sister does not get infected by you! explain why is this so

Answer by pharmacymom
Usually people develop immunity to measles and chicken pox after being exposed once. I have known some people who got chicken pox twice though.

because after your initial infection your body produced antibodies to the virus making you immune. However, the virus will always be in you and may reappear later in life as shingles.

Answer by The-Razors-Edge
Because those diseases are caused by one particular virus. As the body fights off the virus, it produces specific antibodies which target and destroy the virus next time it tries to invade your body, so if you ever did catch it again, you would never know it.
You ever wonder why you keep getting the cold? Because the common cold is caused by hundreds of different viruses and even though the body would produce antibodies for one virus, it has no immediate fortification against all the other kinds of viruses.
The flu virus is tricky. It basically has been the same virus for many years, but like the Borg from Star Trek lol, it adapts and immunizes itself from the flu vaccine every year. This is why you are still susceptible to the flu the year after if you haven't been vaccinated for that years flu.

After some infections, like the measles or chicken pox, your body develops antibodies to protect itself from future infections. Antibodies, also called immunoglobulins, are proteins that can recognize and attack viruses and bacteria that they have previously encountered in the body.
