Yes. You can get shingles if you have been exposed to the varicella virus, either through chickenpox or the vaccine. The vaccine is a live virus vaccine, so the virus stays in your body your entire life, just like it does when you get chickenpox.

Strong immunity to chickenpox, boosted periodically through exposure to others with chickenpox, is the best defense against shingles. People who've had chickenpox have stronger immunity than those who have only gotten the vaccine. So vaccinated people are at a higher risk of shingles than naturally immune people.

Since the chickenpox vaccine came on the market, fewer kids are getting chickenpox, but shingles cases have increased a great deal, because people are no longer getting the natural immunity boosters from being exposed to others with chickenpox. But never fear. The same company that created the problem, Merck, created a vaccine for shingles. Problem is, 1) it's expensive, 2) it has risks just like any vaccine has risks, and 3) the shingles vaccine is only for people aged 60 and older, and the increase in shingles has affected all ages.

The shingles vaccine is just a very, very strong chickenpox vaccine, containing "19,400 PFU (plaque-forming units) of Oka/Merck strain of VZV" compared to 1,350 in the chickenpox vaccine. The shingles vaccine has higher amounts of the other ingredients too. Both vaccines contain "residual components of MRC-5 cells including DNA and protein" from a 14 week old human fetus, aborted for non-medical reasons in 1966.
