chicken pox?

chicken pox?Our baby will be 11 months on November 7th. Late Sunday night he started running a temp.(101-102), became very irritable, had a dry cough, would not take fluids or food and basically stopped sleeping. Tuesday I took him to the doctor… all the doctor had to say was "his throat looks red"—not much help. Thursday and Friday he stated showing signs of improvement, he started sleeping and taking his bottles a bit more. Tonight (Friday) we were giving him a bath and noticed his back was a bit red and had little bumps all over??? Within a matter of 30 minutes it spread to his chest and stomach! I call the ER nurse( Im a first time mother and this caused GREAT concern for me). She said it was probably just a rash due to a viral infection. The only thing is… it doesn't look like a rash its more like a bunch of little bumps? Could this be chicken pox?
Loreya,
Thanks for the links!! I found a picture that appears to be the same as what our baby has--ROSEOLA. Thanks!!! :)

Probably not chicken pox, they take a while to incubate in the system. The nurse is right. There is a rash that comes after a viral infection that is associated with high fever. It is called scarlintina. It is not contagious, and it mostly happens in children up to six years of age. Now if you are still concerned about it being chicken pox, chicken pox usually are big bumps with blisters in them. the are spread a bit apart as well. You can google the net and find pictures of both chicken pox and scarlintina. I don't know that I spelled that right. I hope this helps.

The summary is children get a lot of rashes and

"THE ONE RASH THAT REQUIRES AN URGENT PAGE TO YOUR DOCTOR OR ER VISIT RIGHT AWAY IS:
This rash is called petechiae or purpura. It is caused by ruptured blood vessels under the skin. Petechiae appear as tiny, red, pinpoint, flat spots. They look as if someone used a fine-tip red ink pen to put little dots on the skin. Purpura is similar, but is larger and can be more purple or blue in color. The two most important signs that you can use to distinguish these spots from other rashes are:

They don't blanch when you press on them. Many other kinds of spots, when pressed, will turn white or skin colored for 1 or 2 seconds, and then turn red again. Petechiae and purpura will stay red or purple. They won't blanch at all when pressed.
They are completely flat. Because they occur under the skin, you won't be able to feel any bump. "

Hope all goes well. And I don't think your child has chicken pox unless they been in contact with someone who has chicken pox.

It sure does sound like it. Who knows... a third opinion is never bad. I'd be pretty concerned.
